Linen suit, dyed with butternuts, 1780s
Augusta Auctions November 13, 2013

Image used with express permission from Karen Augusta.
When I asked Karen for permission to use this image, I also asked how they knew what the suit had been dyed with. She replied, "The consignor of the suit was a direct descendant of the original 18th C owner and continues to live on their farmland. Passed down with the suit was the information it derived its' dyed ocher color from butternut husks (not squash!)".
